The small cluster of man-made islands to the north east of Venice is the town of Murano. Just a few minutes water taxi ride from Venice, it’s almost like a suburb but entirely different from Venice.
Murano is famous for its glass art. So, many glass factories open up for factory tours during their working hours.
To the north east of Venice are smaller and older islands. Of these islands, Murano, Burano, Torcello are definitely worth a visit.
Murano’s Glass Art
Beautiful works of glass art in Murano’s stores as well as small pieces.Another creation from the glass artists of MuranoPictures can’t do justice to this huge glass sculpture in town. Light plays with the glass surfaces and creates wonderful effects. It’s a favorite hangout for kids.
Hanging out in Murano
Like most of Italy there are functional water fountains in Murano dispensing delicious naturally cold water.Houses in Venice and surrounding islands have these interesting shutters that look beautiful when open and help the room get totally dark when shut. These are very functional, sturdy and artistic window covering.It was a surprisingly quiet late afternoon in Murano, maybe tourists have left and residents are not hanging out yet.Like Venice, Murano is a collection of man made islands connected by bridges and boats. It’s larger of the other surrounding islands and looks more industrial.This is a side of a building in Murano. As the water rises and falls, it exposes the engineering that made into building these islands. With the rising sea levels and depleting population, it’s only a matter of time before it will become too difficult to maintain these islands.
It’s amazing how this island made by ancient farmers, escaping war, could last for over 2,000 years!
