30 Things that will happen in San Francisco after shelter-in-place is lifted
We’ve been locked in for weeks because of the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping through the world. But, hey we can dream of the days ahead and have fun with our imagination. We posed this question to our friends and we got some fun and thoughtful ideas.

Lines at Ghirardelli will go all the way to the Fisherman’s Wharf.
The line for Coit Tower will extend all the way down Telegraph Hill to Lombard.
San Franciscans and visitors will ride the Cable Cars in PJs.
People who make it to Alcatraz island will never want to come back because it will be too crowded elsewhere in the bay.
Everyone will go to work with long hair because the appointments at hair salons will be 3-6 months out.
Restaurants and bars will extend their seating to the sidewalks (and the roads) in hopes of recouping losses in a week.
All the Sea Lions sunbathing at Pier 39 will get spooked seeing humans and waddle off as fast as possible into the Bay.
Magic will return on Union Square with music, lights, street artists, and people. Hot-dog lovers will devour their favorites at Marie’s Hot-dog stand while families shop at the Macy’s. So much so that grateful San Franciscans will pay her 20x the price to help jump-start her business.
Boudin will run out of all sourdough bread within five minutes of opening.
The new business dress code in the Bay Area will be formal tops with PJ pants and flipflops.
We will drive the Golden Gate Bridge with the top down to taste the cool, crisp air of freedom, and feel alive in our Golden City with newfound gratitude in our hearts.
Imprisoned young adults in their parents’ suburban houses will escape back to their own apartments in the City.
We’ll be rushing to re-live a perfect day in the City from the past –
- Picnic on Crissy Field with and gorgeous views of the Golden Gate!
- Fly a kite and go for a long walk along the water.
- Climb the hill to the top of the Golden Gate Bridge and walk across the span.
- Wrap up the day with great Italian dinner in North Beach.
Trendy masks will be the new fashion accessory and necessity in our beloved San Francisco.
Souvenir shops like Only in San Francisco will be filled with masks showing the Golden Gate Bridge, Cable Car, and Coit Tower.
Hamilton tickets prices will go through the roof and yet they’ll be hard to find.
Japanse Tea Garden, Botanical Garden, and Conservatory of Flowers in the Golden Gate Park will be packed with new nature enthusiasts.
We as humans would have learned to be more thankful, more appreciative of the things that really matter.
Our living rooms and kitchen tables will continue to be our offices for a long time.
The Salesforce Tower will suddenly feel too large because you forgot about your office location. You’ll need to text colleagues with a good memory.
We will be “kinder” to one another and we will “appreciate” each other more. Not just to people we know, but also people we see in lines, in restaurants, just out and about.
We’ll be able to dine at SPQR instead of taking out the amazing mushroom gnocchi in a box.
Pubs and Bars like Buena Vista Café will have to remain open 24/7 because folks will have had enough of sheltering at home.
Any commute longer than 5 minutes, even in San Francisco traffic, will be the talk of the town.
Gyms all over like Fitness SF will run incentives to bring us back from the virtual to the real gym.
By the Transamerica Pyramid, you’ll see colleagues dressed in formal COVID wear – dressed only from the waist up.
We are all in this together so we’ll keep a distance and wear masks to keep us all healthy on the beaches of San Francisco.
BART riders will be arguing about the safety of enormous duffel bags packed with lunch, mid-morning snacks, late-afternoon snacks, additional cups of coffee, etc. But someone will remember that its a good way to maintain some physical distance.
Our favorite places will reopen. We will be back in the City Lights Book Store in San Francisco for more reading.
When we try our office wear for the first day back in the office, nothing will fit.
