Burano, an island of Venice, is like a painting. When I saw pictures of Burano, I thought they were an artist’s rendition of a dream. In life, it’s is even more unexpected. It feels like walking in a life size canvas painted with vibrant colors.
Bruno is a small island but gets a lot of visitors. So there are many shops, bakeries and restaurants, including some Michelin star restaurants (but they need advanced reservations). A stroll along the canal and town are a treat to the eye, just as the food is to the taste buds.
It’s mind blowing how the whole island is painted in vibrant colors that look so beautiful together.
Burano fills my heart with joy. Nina found this heart formation on a window ❤️
Even the love locks in Burano are colorful and artistic
Even the camera shy pose in Burano
Burano is best know for its fine hand made lace. Here’s a lace artist make gorgeous laces. Upstairs in this store is a museum which houses a collection of high end exotic works of lace like wedding gowns, dining sets, window coverings, all made by local artists.
What an ingenious tool for making lace. The cylindrical cushion provides the comfortable base for the lace and the the box keeps the needles and thread handy. How creative!
Burano lace artisans make dress, wedding gowns, scarfs, shade umbrellas, place mats, curtain decorations… you name it.
Like Venice, Burano artists make stunning masks. But there are many cheap replicas from Chinese factories too.
This style of mask original started from the days of the plague when the doctors wore such mask to avoid infection from breathing or physical contact.
Walking along the waterfront in Burano.
Walking along the waterfront, we saw a small alley and on the other side was the happening area of restaurants and shops.
It was even nicer to walk into the quiet alleys of Burano. At one time we lost track of where we were but it was fun discovering houses. Here’s a mom pleading the child to take a picture with her and here he is fussing like my kids 🙂
After lunch we had to find a traditional bakery with its many local specialties
The two skills of Burano come together in this display – the fine arts of baking and lace making.
A fancy umbrella from Burano’s lace artists.
